Popular Atari 2600 console (released in 1977) was important in popularizing video games in the late 1970s. But the machine has very limited sound capacities and no significant game music has written for it.
The game cartridge of Pitfall II, however, includes a special chip designed by game designer David Crane himself. The chip is able to play four channels simultaneously.
In this game music plays much larger role than in any other Atari 2600 game even occasionally giving cues for a player.
