All five 8910s ran from the same clock source, so they would be sure to stay in lockstep and so lots of phasing effects could be used. It all sounds really neat.

audio was an entire daughterboard with a Z80 CPU controlling five(!) AY8910s for a total of 15 sound channels. plus programmable analog filters on each channel, and the Z80 also drove a DAC in software for a 16th channel for digitized drums

Though, if you want to hear some excellent use of AY, go look up the soundtrack for the arcade version of Gyruss. Konami went a bit mad with the audio hardware on that game.
