Okay, there are simple cases like...
Chris Huelsbeck composed Turrican music for Amiga, so he is credited or this. ...then there's this... Mad Max did Atari arrangement of Chris' music so only he is credited for arranged soundtrack, namely, for Atari soundtrack for Turrican. ...similar to this... DaXX made various remixes to various games, but only he is credited for remixes he made, which is just as logical. Now, the dilemma I have is this... For orchestrated game music, there is sometimes renowned composer that composes the music for the very game, but arrangement is done by someone else. Uncharted series are such samples, where composer and arranger are two different artist. If I keep to the upper guidelines, then the composer would never be credited to his own songs because he did not arrange them for the game, and game are platform exclusive, so it won't be the case like with Chris and his Turrican music for Amiga. In such exceptions, I would attach both composer and arranger to the game song and putting info who is who in the game song info. But before I do anything, want to check if there is a way how we handle such things? If this is exception to the upper rule, we might add this to FAQ somewhere for other users as well. |

The same problem rose its ugly head when I was uploading songs from Police Quest 3. I was using MP3s that I grabbed from here: http://www.queststudios.com
These files were "recorded from the original Roland MT-32 score with Sound Canvas enhancements." So basically the songs were arranged, and are not direct rips from the game. I wasn't sure how to credit the songs, so I asked other guys in the chat (can't remember who exactly - it's been a while already), and I was instructed to credit the songs to Mr. Lewandowksi and mention the composer (Jan Hammer) in the info box. This just doesn't feel right to me. |

i would agree in the Uncharted case that both composer and arranger could be "artist"... so both Alan and Greg get credit if you ask me They probably co-worked alot with the music anyway
The PQ3 song is correct as it is now... Tom is the "artist" and Jan gets mentioned as original composer in the info field. And...(dont read this if you easily confused).. it is probably likely that Jan did not make the MT-32 music you hear in Police Qest 3... he "only" composed it and then the one of the Sierra sound guys made the actual MT-32 game version, but if the original PQ3 music gets uploaded here so is it ok to have Jan Hammer as artist since the game credits promotes that. I don't think there is so many "difficult" cases when it comes to choose artist. |
